Welcome to Stecular Marks, a newsletter that covers the 6 bullets themed above that I’ve experienced, curious about, and insights that may further spark curious minds.
First, wishing you all a festive holiday season filled with warmth and happiness.
Spark [Communication]
Communication lies at the heart of human interaction, serving as the bridge that connects thoughts between individuals or groups.
Articulation is a powerful tool that shapes our understanding and perceptions. When wielded with intention and care, it can enlighten and broaden perspectives, leading us towards greater understanding and empathy.
Conversely, if used manipulatively, it can mislead and distort the truth.
My aim in writing and speaking is to practice articulating my truths not to dominate or correct others, but rather to offer new ideas for contemplation. By presenting thoughts in a manner that encourages reflection rather than confrontation, I hope to foster a space for open-minded discussion and growth.
A part of the art of communication, then, lies not just in the ability to express oneself clearly, but in the capacity to pose questions and craft thought-provoking statements that gently nudge others to reconsider their viewpoints.
Usually, it is the contrarian statements.
This approach doesn't seek to challenge directly but to open doors to new ways of thinking and understanding. It's through this nuanced articulation that we can expand our collective perspective.
Technology [Current pros/cons of web3]
In my exploration of the web3 space, I've been keen to understand it and discern its strengths and weaknesses.
It's becoming clear to me that web3, with its rapid advancements, is on the verge of becoming a significant part of our daily lives.
While the onboarding process for new users in the web3 realm has been somewhat challenging, a myriad of tools and companies are emerging to streamline this experience.
Currently, web3 is widely recognized for its applications in decentralized finance (DeFi) and cryptocurrencies with news headlines of bad actors and memecoins.
However, its potential stretches far beyond these domains. A host of innovative use cases are emerging, redefining how we perceive and interact with this technology:
Social Media Evolution: Platforms like Lens and Farcaster are reimagining social media dynamics in the web3 framework, offering more control and ownership to users.
Automotive Data: Initiatives like Dimo are tapping into web3 to revolutionize vehicle information sharing and management.
Climate Change Initiatives: Collaborations between entities like Polygon Labs, Book.io, and Tres Cool are harnessing web3 for environmental sustainability.
Charitable Ventures: Projects like Glo Dollar aim to combat poverty using stablecoins, showcasing web3's potential in humanitarian efforts.
These examples highlight a broader movement among businesses, organizations, and developers towards making web3 more inclusive and versatile, transcending its typical financial connotations.
As an engineer and developer, I am excited to delve deeper into blockchain technology and the development of layer 2 applications. Understanding and contributing to these innovations represent a frontier of endless possibilities.
Moreover, the skill of on-chain analysis, akin to analyzing a company's real-time quarterly reports but for specific blockchains or tokens, is easily attainable. Resources like Web3 Academy help demystify these technologies, offering insights through accessible infographics and analyses.
My journey into web3 so far was about developing a DeFi portfolio and uncovering its broader applications and contributions to various sectors, highlighting its potential to revolutionize not just finance but multiple aspects of our lives and society.
Experiences [Parenthood]
My daughter, now six months old, has been a catalyst for numerous lessons, some learned through mistakes, others through the strains and joys of relationship dynamics. As we embark on the journey of baby-led weaning, I'm more mindful of the dietary choices we make and their impact.
I've observed a fascinating parallel between a breastfeeding mother's diet, often mirroring that of a body builder or fitness enthusiast in its nutritional focus, and the broader concept of mirroring in parenthood. This idea extends beyond diet to encompass all aspects of lifestyle and behavior.
Our children are like mirrors, reflecting not only what we show them but also what they see us doing and valuing.
We like snacks in this household and it will present an interesting challenge. We understand that our daughter will likely adopt our habits, including our snacking tendencies. I’m contemplating a shift in my dietary choices, potentially adopting a lifestyle with minimal sweets and snacks.
It's about creating an environment where the temptation to indulge is minimized, not by concealment, but by absence.
Life can be like a series of mirrors and filters, each reflecting and filtering qualities we aspire to embody or pass on. As parents, we become the model, and our children become the mirrors, reflecting our habits. How we filter out undesired traits is a process. It’s a continuous process of observation, adjustment, and evolution.
Parenting is like fine-tuning a signal, attentively making adjustments, observing the resulting changes, and iterating this process. Striving to control what we can, always with an eye on the evolving reflection that our actions cast in our children's lives. It’s a balance of guiding, shaping, and learning from the life that our children present to us.
This journey of mutual growth and reflection is not just about what we teach our children, but also about the lessons we learn about ourselves in the process. A reflection and refinement that continues as we all change.
Creative [on Writing]
A quote on creativity that resonated with me:
"Writing is a journey. Writing, quite literally, is thinking. Writing isn't the transcription of ideas from your consciousness to a physical page. Writing is the creative process that transforms fragmented thoughts into cohesive stores." — Jack Raines
This captures the essence of my approach to writing. It's a process, turning scattered ideas into structured narratives. My writing routine involves distilling insights from my experiences, questions, and learnings into clear, coherent thoughts.
The magic of writing lies in its flexibility. A simple change of a word can alter the entire meaning, showcasing a language's transformative power.
This extends beyond text to other mediums like audio, video, and digital art, each uniquely shaping fragmented thoughts into impactful stories.
Writing and other forms of communication are not mere information transfer. They are art forms, connecting ideas to create narratives that resonate and inspire.
Life [Heritage]
I recently engaged in a philosophical discussion with a mentor I admire, delving into the topic of immigration and the lives that precede it.
When you look at other immigrant familys, do you wonder what the parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on have gone through?
It's thought-provoking to consider the journey of immigrant families.
How did their ancestors, like parents, grandparents, and beyond, navigate their experiences?
Often, in pursuit of a better life, they move from being prosperous farmers, doctors, lawyers, and technicians to roles like factory workers and maids, experiencing social and economic changes. This shift, I realize, has been a common narrative over the past 30-40 years.
There's a saying that resonates with me:
A man plants a tree knowing well that he won’t be sitting in it’s shade.
This speaks to laying the groundwork for future generations.
My dad, for instance, was driven by a single goal. To shield us from financial struggles and hunger. He has fulfilled this promise admirably.
However, I think he isn’t sitting in that shade just yet.
Many of my friends who’ve met him for the first time think that he is the embodiment of the American dream. From humble beginnings and earning mere dollars an hour, he has risen to own a successful business and achieve an upper-middle-class lifestyle.
The same can be said for my father-in-law.
Reflecting on this, I realize they have set inspiring examples for my daughter. She will grow up hearing these tales of perseverance and success, learning from the resilience of her grandparents. In addition to her own parents.
But her path will be different, marked by the privilege she inherits. It's essential for her to recognize and understand this privilege. My hope is that she uses it as a foundation to positively impact those around her, not with arrogance, but with humility and a genuine desire to do great things. Whatever that may be for her.
A new life and a new legacy to build as parents. A positive force, with actions, like ripples setting an example for our daughter to emulate and carry forward.
Actions [Intent]
As the year draws to a close, it's a natural time for reflection and setting new resolutions. Starting small with achievable goals each week or month can build a foundation of consistency and resilience.
For years, I've been working on enhancing my communication skills, and it remains a top priority. Alongside this, I'm committed to learning and adopting practices that positively transform my life.
We often judge ourselves harshly, even while giving our best. Recognizing that we are doing our utmost is crucial.
It's important to understand that our actions, even those that seem insignificant, often have a purpose and can prove to be significant later on.
Things happens for a reason.
It's a reminder that our choices and efforts, no matter how small or uncertain, are part of a larger journey. They shape our path and lead us to where we need to be, even if the destination is not immediately apparent.
Embracing the present is key. If there's something you're compelled to do, the best time is always now. Our actions in the present are the stepping stones to our future.
